NECC STUDENT TIPS
Want to succeed in college? Researchers have discovered many of the
reasons why some students succeed in college and some don't. You can
probably guess some of the reasons yourself.
The following suggestions will help you get the most out of your
classes and earn the grades you are capable of. You can click on any of
the topics below for more detailed information and related suggestions.
- Network. Get to know some of your classmates and teachers ( and
staff of the college). NECC is a people-oriented place and a
friendly environment.
- Don't overdo. Many NECC students have jobs and families and other
time commitments. Learning in college courses usually involves about
twice as much time out of class as in it (in other words, six hours
a week for a typical 3-credit course). Generally speaking, if you
are working full time, you can be a half-time student. If you are a
full-time student, you should not be more than a half-time employee.
- Attend every class. Attendance is critical to success in college
courses. Don't miss class unless you absolutely have to. If you are
forced to be absent, let the teacher know the reasons and find out
what you missed.
- Become actively involved in class. Be an active listener and
participant in your courses.
- Edit your notes. Spend a few minutes each day going over the notes
you take in class.
- Use active reading strategies. Learn to apply the SQ4R textbook
reading method.
- Study on a regular schedule. Don't wait for the night before your
test to begin studying. Plan your study time, and study on a regular
basis.
- Get help. Learn about the many resources that NECC offers to
enhance your learning, support your efforts, and help you succeed.
