| You are expected to complete a minimum of one hour of
independent reading each week. Your instructor will provide specific
directions regarding your choice of materials.
Each week, complete a reading log sheet to document your independent
reading. For each entry, record the title, source, pages and date of
what you've read.
Example: "Sheep Clones
Human," Boston Globe, June 26, pg. 1, 5.
Each entry must include a short summary of what you've read and a
brief statement of your reaction to what you've read.
See the formatted reading log assignment sheets for additional
information.
Suggestions for Independent Reading Logs
Reading
 | Choose reading materials of interest to you. |
 | Vary your reading materials; explore materials with which you
haven't had much experience (in other words, try something new!) |
Click here for specific suggestions for reading materials.
Writing
 | Write your log as soon as you have finished the reading, so the
material will be fresh in your mind. |
 | Be sure to provide all the required information on your log sheet.
You must indicate the length/time of your reading in order to be
fully credited. |
 | Keep your summaries short; you don't have to summarize every
detail. Five or six sentences is usually enough for a good summary. |
 | Your response should also consist of several sentences, and should
be an honest statement of your thoughts and feelings about what
you've read. Be as specific as possible (in other words, don't write
"it was interesting;" better to write, for example,
"I was really interested in learning about the debate over gun
control.") |
