Who are the courses for?

Anyone interested in improving his/her reading, vocabulary, and study skills. However, matriculated NECC students may be required to take the courses, based on their reading assessment score.

What is the difference between the two courses?

Basic Reading is a course in reading fundamentals. In Basic Reading, you learn how to expand your vocabulary and improve your level of reading comprehension.
College Reading is a more advanced course, in which you will learn how to read and study at a college level. Advanced vocabulary instruction is also a part of the College Reading course.

Which course is right for you?

Placement in the courses is determined by the college's assessment process. For more information, check the assessment center's Web site at http://cit.necc.mass.edu/assessment

When are the courses offered?

Both courses are offered every semester (fall, spring and summer) in the day and evening. click here for the schedule for the Summer session or here for the Fall semester.

Where are the courses offered?

Both courses are offered each semester on both the Haverhill and Lawrence campuses.

Do I receive credit for these courses?

Yes, but the credits may not be used toward graduation requirements.

Will the credits transfer?

Usually not. All Massachusetts public colleges follow the same guidelines: courses which teach students to improve their reading and study skills may not be used to meet graduation requirements. Some private colleges will accept the credits for these courses as electives.

Who teaches the course?

All sections are taught by highly qualified, experienced instructors with Master's Degree's in reading or a related field (such as English). All of our instructors have been trained in developmental reading methods, and follow approximately the same curriculum outline. You can learn more about our instructors at the NECC reading instructors page.
